We visit Büyükada, and Erenköy Street Market

We took a similar ferry to this one, when we went to
Büyükada, one of the Princes' Islands

On Wednesday, Angela had kindly invited us to lunch at her house on the island of Büyükada, one of the Princes Islands off the coast of Istanbul. It was a gloriously sunny day, but still rather cold. After one of Angela's delicious lunches, she ordered up a phaeton to the house, and we toured the island so that Becca could experience the delights of a horse and carriage ride.

Later we took the dog for a walk in the forest. One odd thing about Buyukada is the marked difference in temperature from one side of the island to the other. On one hand we were warm and thinking of throwing off our coats, while on the other, it was freezing. Angela explained that this was due to the direction of the wind. On the north side of the island, the wind was blowing from the north, bringing in cold air, but the other side was sheltered and bathed in sunshine.

The next day we shopped at Erenköy's street market. This is huge, covering several long streets, and is very colourful with stalls jostling for space, and the stallholders vying for attention. I love the street markets in Istanbul, there is always something interesting to see.

We saw this friendly cheese-maker in the market.
She gave us some of her home-made cheese to taste

This man was selling different grains, beans and lentils.
There is a far greater variety of produce in the street markets,
than can be found in the supermarkets!

We had lunch in a little restaurant by the market. These lovely ladies are hand-making Mantı, a sort of Turkish mini dumpling,
served with yoghurt, garlic and red paprika

Jessica in Istanbul

It was very cold in Istanbul, so Jessica was wrapped up warmly

I collected Jessica from England and brought her to Istanbul for 10 days, while Clare moved to Italy to begin her new job with the European Commission Research Station. We had such fun together. Jessica is so easy to entertain, she never complains or makes a fuss. She is quite delightful.

We went with Angela to the Grand Bazaar, and to Şark Han, an amazing emporium of goods imported from India and China; no doubt keeping up the ancient trade that travelled back and forth along the old Silk Road.

At the Grand Bazaar, we learned new ways to tie scarves.  Here is Angela, modelling an elegant knot.

We also went to the hairdresser where Jessica had her hair trimmed. We were fascinated to see how he did the parting. I tried to recreate it at home,
but it never looked the same again!

One day, we went to Büyükada to have lunch with Angela, and afterwards rode around the island in a pony and phaeton. Fortunately, Angla provided us with blankets, as it was freezing cold and trying to snow!

At the end of the ride, the good-natured driver let
Jessica sit in the driver's seat...

Photography Day 7: The Princes' Islands

Transport on Buyukada

No tour of Istanbul is complete without a visit to the islands. So on Jerry's last day, I took him to this idyllic spot. We visited Büyükada (The Big Island), the largest of the 5 inhabited Princes Islands. Angela met us from the ferry, and we took a horse and buggy ride around the island, stopping from time to time to take photos. Apart from the municipality vehicles, like the ambulance, police car, and rubbish truck, no cars are allowed on the island, so the only means of transport is by horse and buggy.

We stopped for a cup of Turkish tea, so the horses
could rest after pulling the carriage up a long hill climb.

We stopped from time to time to photograph the view...

...while Angela admired the view from the buggy

After our ride, we had lunch in a fish restaurant by the sea.
We chose our first course from the mezzes on offer...

..and finished with a cup of Turkish coffee

The view from the restaurant was stunning

Later, we walked up to Angela's house for tea, and just had to find room
for this delicious cake and ice cream dessert

On our return to the mainland, we decided to photograph the fish market by the Bostanci port. This fish seller insisted on having his photo taken with Jerry.

This was such a fun day, and I hope Jerry enjoyed it as much as I did!

My busy life in Istanbul

Far from taking things easy in my dotage, my life has become a whirl of activity lately, if this last week is anything to go by! On Monday, I was to have joined an IWI (International Women of Istanbul) group going to Büyükada, one of the Princes' Islands, especially to see their new museum. Unfortunately, this trip was cancelled due to lack of interest, so I was able to play tennis instead. I mentioned my aborted trip to Angela, who lives on the island, and she suggested that I visit anyway, and meet her for lunch, on Wednesday.

On Tuesday we had our twice monthly IWI coffee morning, followed by lunch, where Judith and Siobhan expressed their interest in my planned trip, and Angela invited them along too. On the way home from lunch, I met my neighbour, Yasemin, who was about to walk along the sea front, so I quickly changed into sports mode and joined her. We walked for half an hour, then exercised in one of the exercise parks there, before walking the return half-hour home.

These long steps lead up to the road in front of the Splendid Hotel, where our phaeton was waiting.

On Wednesday, Judith, Siobhan and I took the ferry to Büyükada and met Angela at the docks. It was interesting being with someone who had local knowledge. Angela led us to some steps of which I was unaware, despite several visits to this small island. At the top of the steps a phaeton was waiting, ready to take us to the museum. Extraordinarily, the museum is quite far from the ferry port, so a phaeton is essential. It is not surprising that they have very few visitors to the museum, out of the thousands that regularly visit the island.

One of the very early phaetons outside the museum.

The museum is quite small and still in the developmental stage, but was interesting nevertheless. It tells of the history of the islands and how they got their name, together with lists of the flora and fauna found on them, and some ancient artifacts that have been discovered. We only had half-an-hour to peruse the exhibits, as the phaeton driver wouldn't wait any longer. We had to agree to his terms as there was no other way back!

I was really taken by this magnificent staircase in Angela's home. The paintings on the walls are by Angela herself.

The phaeton dropped us off at Angela's beautiful house, where we sipped pre-lunch spritzers on her verandah, while watching her gardener, with some trepidation, as he pruned the top-most branches of a tree. We were rather concerned when we heard an almighty crash as he fell out of the tree, but were reassured when he extricated himself and waved to show he was all right. Angela then treated us to a wonderful lunch, before we set off for the ferry to return to the mainland.

Thursday was another tennis morning, followed by a trip to the street market in Erenköy with Yasemin. Tired after tennis, I insisted we took a taxi there, although we did walk back all the way home. As it is quite far, next time I am also taking a taxi back again! While we were at the market, I told Yasemin about my trip to Büyükada, and she also wanted to go, so we arranged to visit the island the next day, Friday.

Yasemin phoned her cousin to wish him a happy birthday,
on our way to the island.

That is how I found myself on the island again on Friday. I decided not to tell Angela as I decided that she had probably had enough of me by then, as she had seen me on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday already! Yasemin and I had a lovely day. After visiting the museum, we walked around the town, had lunch in one of the many restaurants, and shopped.

We saw this man mending horses' bridles.

I had a great week, but today is Saturday and I have taken the day off, especially as next week is beginning to look just as hectic! Oh well, we only live once, so we had better make the most of it. Although I am secretly hoping we get more than one shot at life, it's such fun once you get the hang of it!!!

We saw this phaeton decorated for a wedding...

...and bicycles for hire.
